The “Other Visa” in Czech Immigration – Who Is It For?

Czech visa type "other"

The Czech Republic offers approximately 10 different visa and residence permit options, tailored to specific purposes such as employment, business, studies, or family reunification. These are well-defined categories that cater to most applicants. However, what happens if your situation doesn’t align with any of these categories? This is where the “Other Visa” comes into play.

What Is the "Other Visa"?

The “Other Visa” is designed to provide an option for individuals whose circumstances do not fit into any standard visa category. However, it serves as a way to petition the Czech Ministry of the Interior (MOI) to recognize your reason for seeking a visa as valid and compelling enough to grant approval.

Who Can Apply for the "Other Visa"?

While the rules and eligibility criteria for the “Other Visa” aren’t strictly defined, it is primarily used in the following situations:

  1. Students of Non-Accredited Programs

Examples include:

  • Private universities such as Anglo-American University or University of New York in Prague.
  • Preparatory courses at public universities, such as year-long programs designed to prepare students for entrance exams to bachelor’s programs.
  1. Unmarried Non-EU Couples

Another common scenario involves unmarried couples where both partners are non-EU citizens. This option applies to those in long-term, committed relationships who cannot qualify for family reunification visas or residence permits because they are not legally married.

To be eligible, you must provide evidence that your relationship resembles a marriage in all but legal status. Examples of acceptable documentation include:

  • Statements detailing your relationship.
  • Photos showing your time together.
  • Joint lease agreements.
  • Proof of a shared bank account.
  • Travel records.

What About the Retirement Visa?

In the past, the “Other Visa” was also used by retirees who wished to live in the Czech Republic, provided they could demonstrate sufficient income (such as from social security) and a valid connection to the country, such as ancestral ties. However, this is no longer accepted. MOI now typically argues that short-term tourist visas are sufficient for visiting a country based on ancestral ties.

Why Seek Professional Help?

The “Other Visa” process can be complex and unpredictable. Conversely, many applicants invest significant time and effort into preparing their application, only to face rejection due to insufficient documentation or unconvincing explanations.

If you’re considering applying for the “Other Visa,” consulting with an expert can help ensure your application is well-prepared and increases your chances of approval. The professionals at Prague Visas can guide you through the process, helping you avoid common pitfalls such as claims of “lack of motivation” or an “untrustworthy relationship.”
